Cetacean research and education assistant

About the role

Association ELI‑S is looking for a motivated Cetacean Research and Education Assistant to join its team in San Juan del Sur, Nicaragua. The position runs from 1 November 2026 to 30 April 2027 and combines hands‑on fieldwork with outreach and data management, offering a unique chance to contribute to marine mammal conservation while living in a biodiverse coastal community.

Key responsibilities

• Supervise and participate in boat‑based data collection on humpback whales, bottlenose dolphins and pantropical spotted dolphins.
• Maintain and calibrate research equipment and ensure high‑quality data entry.
• Support training sessions for international students and early‑career researchers.
• Assist with educational activities for local schools, fishermen, tourists and community groups.
• Participate in animal rescue operations when needed.
• Help organise logistics, field‑team coordination and public awareness events.

Required profile

• Master’s degree in biology, marine sciences, environmental protection or a related field.
• Fluent in spoken and written English and Spanish.
• Ability to work independently and within a small multicultural team.
• High flexibility, initiative and adaptability to field conditions.
• Positive attitude and willingness to engage with local communities.

Required skills

• Experience with photo‑identification of marine mammals.
• Proficiency in standard computer tools (MS Word, Excel, Internet).
